Head of the NFLPA, Gene Upshaw, has passed away at the age of 63 from pancreatic cancer.
He was a pretty steady guy who I think managed to navigate the path between league needs and player needs pretty effectively. However, many felt that he was too close to the league and consequently he did receive his share of criticism over the years. Bryant Gumbel got in some hot water awhile back when he stated on his 'Real Sports' show that everyone knew that Upshaw was the owners' lapdog.
