I am not the world's biggest Microsoft fan, but this software sounds interesting. Photosynth is a creation of Microsoft's Live Labs research and product line. Photosynth allows you to take a collection of 2D photos of the same item or location and turn them into a 3D navigable rendering of the item or environment in question. For people who love photography and interactivity it sounds pretty awesome.

This software does look pretty cool. But it's biggest downside...it won't run on Macs! Boo. I wonder if Apple has something comparable in the works.
According to the SciAm article there is some development in the direction of the Mac, but it isn't here yet.
